I’ve had a certain way of dressing for as long as I can remember. Classic. Considered. Never what most people would call fashion-forward - but always very much mine.

Getting dressed in the morning should be easy. A few pieces that feel right, and then you’re out the door feeling put together and intentional. That’s always been the goal.

Around 80% of my wardrobe is great basics - timeless pieces I can mix and match with everything. An H&M t-shirt. Massimo Dutti jeans. Simple, well-fitting, endlessly reliable. But the remaining 20% is where the magic happens. A classic Chanel bag. Real gold and diamond jewellery. A well-tailored coat. A beautiful pair of loafers. These are the pieces that instantly elevate everything else - that tie the whole outfit together and make the simple basics feel intentional.

It has taken me years - and a good deal of self-discipline - to build that 20%. But every piece is well-loved and worn daily. They are not decoration. They are foundation.

My point is this: it’s all in the details. And this is just as true for a home.

A thoughtfully chosen knob on a kitchen cabinet. A door handle that doesn’t scream but still catches your eye. A light switch in brushed brass instead of the usual white plastic. These are small choices - but they are the choices that separate a regular home from a truly intentional one.

It’s not only about buying beautiful furniture. That’s the baseline. It’s about paying attention to the smaller details that bring depth, texture and atmosphere to a space - the things you touch every single day without thinking about them.

And that is what this article - and the edit that follows - is about.

Why hardware matters more than people think

Most of the details we invest in at home are visual. The colour on the walls. The rug on the floor. The lamp in the corner. We notice them with our eyes - and that matters.

But hardware is different. Hardware is the only detail in your home you physically touch - every single day, without thinking about it. The kitchen knob you pull open while making morning coffee. The door handle you reach for when putting the children to bed. The cabinet pull you use ten times before lunch.

You see your walls. But you feel your handles.

And that difference is worth paying attention to.

What I’m paying attention to while choosing

I’m not an interior designer - and I’m certainly not a hardware expert. But I’ve spent a lot of time recently looking, comparing and learning as we search for the right knobs for our own kitchen. These are the things I keep coming back to.

Material - and how it ages

This is where I always start when I’m browsing. The material sets a tone - sometimes more than I expect it to.

I find myself drawn to materials that change over time. Brass that slowly develops a patina. Aged iron that darkens with use. Porcelain that feels cool to the touch. There’s something about a material that doesn’t look the same after a year of being lived with - it feels more honest somehow. More like it belongs.

I’m still figuring out what’s right for our kitchen. But I know I want something that ages alongside the home rather than something that tries to stay perfect.

Shape & proportion

A knob or a pull. Round or linear. Oversized or discreet.

The same cabinet looks completely different depending on what you put on it. A large brass knob on a simple cabinet makes the whole kitchen feel grounded. A slim, minimal pull tells a completely different story. Neither is wrong - but seeing them side by side made me understand that the relationship between the hardware and the surface is where the whole feeling lives.

The feel in your hand

This is the one I keep thinking about - and the part you really can’t judge from a photograph.

Weight. Texture. How a handle feels when you reach for it first thing in the morning. Whether it feels solid or hollow.

I visited a hardware store recently and spent a long time just holding different options. But it made such a difference. Once you start noticing how a handle actually feels in your hand, it’s hard to ignore.

Consistency vs Intentional Contrast

For a long time I assumed everything in a home should match. Same knobs in every room. Same finish throughout.

I’m starting to change my mind on this. What I find more interesting - at least right now - is the idea of choosing room by room. Brass in the kitchen, something different in the bedroom. Not random. Not mismatched. But chosen based on the atmosphere each space is trying to create.

I’m still in the middle of this decision for our own home. But the more I look, the more I think a considered home doesn’t need to feel uniform - it just needs to feel like every choice was made with intention.

Where I’m looking right now

I’ve spent more time than I probably should admit browsing hardware over the past few weeks. What started as a practical search for new kitchen knobs has turned into something closer to a small obsession.

April has always felt like a month of quiet new beginnings. The days slowly grow lighter, the first flowers appear, and the rhythm of everyday life begins to shift with the arrival of spring. A gentle sense that things are slowly moving forward again.

In this Monthly Mood, I’m sharing a personal reflection on the season - alongside a curated edit of interior and wardrobe pieces currently on my radar.

This year, April feels especially symbolic. I find myself in a season of quiet momentum - building something of my own alongside the rhythm of family life, two small children and all the beautiful chaos that comes with it. I feel both stretched and deeply energised. As this space begins to take form alongside my YouTube channel and everyday life at home, the longer days and returning light feel especially welcome.

A quiet sense of momentum, gently finding its way in.

Spring always has a way of bringing inspiration back with it. The sunlight settles softly into the living room in the late afternoon, just touching the curtains. Morning coffee beside the children while they eat their breakfast, windows slightly open, birds singing outside. Small moments that begin to feel fuller again as the season shifts.

I have always been drawn to pieces that feel simple, classic and timeless - often with a small twist or something aged. Something that carries a quiet sense of character. A vintage object worn at the edges. An embroidered tablecloth for an outdoor breakfast table. Or something slightly unexpected - like animal print finding its way into an otherwise quiet wardrobe. Small additions that shift the feeling of a space or an outfit without overwhelming it.

As the season shifts, inspiration returns more easily. Both in the way I style our home and in the way I get dressed. The lighter days seem to bring a clearer eye - a renewed appreciation for the details that have always mattered.

How I'm Dressing This Spring

Spring dressing for me is always about quiet updates rather than a full refresh. A new texture, an unexpected shoe - one piece that shifts how everything else feels.

This season I find myself drawn to the same tones I love in our home. Earthy, calm and considered. Lots of cream - light, effortless and endlessly versatile. And black, because it remains the most reliable colour in any wardrobe. Classic, timeless and the perfect companion to everything.

The combination of the two is what I keep returning to right now. Cream and black together feel both simple and complete - the kind of dressing that requires very little thought but always looks intentional.

At Home

A home doesn’t change with the seasons the way a wardrobe does. The larger pieces stay - the furniture, the rugs, the things that have always been there. But the atmosphere shifts. Quietly, almost without noticing.

For me it’s the smaller additions that do the most work this time of year. A floral pillow that brings something softer and more alive into the room. Muted flowers on the balcony - sage, lavender, thyme. The windows open a little longer. A beautiful iron chair catching the afternoon light outside.

And sometimes it’s even smaller than that. A glass of cold white wine or a Margarita at the end of a productive day. The right scent in the right room. The perfectly aged knob. Loungewear that makes staying home feel like a luxury.

That’s what this edit is about. Decorating is part of it. But so is everything else that makes a home feel like home.

01. Layers: Linen & Embroidery

I’ve always loved delicate textile details in a home. Linen tablecloths, lace edges on pillowcases, embroidered napkins, placemats or a soft tablecloth instantly add a sense of depth to a room, especially in interiors that lean towards muted or earthy tones.

I’m rarely drawn to decorating with a lot of colour. Instead, I find that layering textures such as linen, cotton, lace and embroidery creates a much more interesting and nuanced atmosphere. These details are subtle, but they carry a certain softness that feels timeless rather than decorative. In a room built around neutral tones, these delicate textures often provide the contrast that keeps the space from feeling flat.

With spring slowly arriving, I’ve been thinking about adding a lace tablecloth to our farmhouse. There’s something about outdoor breakfasts, soft sunlight and delicate textiles that feels incredibly beautiful to me.

I will always have a soft spot for embroidered towels or pillowcases - and even more so when finished with custom initials for family or guests. Those small gestures deserve far more appreciation.

02. Materials that age beautifully

Natural materials have always been at the centre of what I personally find beautiful in interiors. Marble, solid wood, iron, travertine and limestone all carry a certain honesty - slightly imperfect in the best possible way.

What I love most about these materials is how they age. Over time, they develop patina, small scratches and subtle colour shifts that quietly tell the story of a home.

It’s something I’ve become increasingly conscious of when making larger interior decisions - kitchens, bathrooms or renovation projects. Natural materials often come with a higher price point, but whenever possible, I will almost always choose the real thing: solid wood over veneer, stone over imitation.

I also love incorporating smaller objects in natural materials - a stone platter, a wooden bowl or an iron chair - each one adding a quiet layer of depth to a home.

Because the most beautiful materials rarely look their best on day one. They become more beautiful with time.

03. Soft, layered light

Lighting is one of the interior elements I care most about. Not just because it’s functional, but because it quietly defines the atmosphere of a home.

A room can feel warm, calm and inviting - or flat and slightly uncomfortable - depending entirely on the light within it.

I’ve always been drawn to softer lighting: table lamps, floor lamps and warm bulbs, rather than relying on a single strong overhead light. There is something about a room lit in layers that feels more considered, more at ease.

Lamps with fabric shades are something I return to again and again. They diffuse the light in a way that feels gentle and atmospheric, especially in the evening, when the light softens and the pace of the day begins to slow. At the same time, I do appreciate spot lighting when it feels intentional - quietly highlighting a material, a surface or a single object in a room.

The most beautiful interiors rarely rely on one single light source. Instead, light is layered softly throughout the space, creating a sense of depth, calm and quiet warmth.

04. Scent as a signature

Scent is one of the most overlooked elements of a home. Yet it’s often the first thing you notice when walking into a beautiful space or a store. A home that smells beautiful immediately feels more welcoming and comforting.

I love scented candles, especially during the colder months, but also room sprays, incense paper or reed diffusers. Over time, a scent can almost become part of a home’s identity - something people begin to associate with a certain place, a moment or a feeling.

I find myself drawn to scents that feel soft, warm and slightly unexpected - never too sweet, but layered and subtle. Something that lingers quietly in the background rather than announcing itself.

Almost like a quiet signature. Music and scent - the two things that make a place impossible to forget.

05. Depth & Character

A home becomes infinitely more interesting when it contains pieces with a past. Vintage furniture and objects bring a sense of individuality that is difficult to recreate when everything is newly purchased at once.

I love mixing vintage pieces into both larger furniture and smaller objects. A console table in dark wood, an iron side table, an antique mirror, or a ceramic bowl found in a small shop can all add depth and character to a space.

Some of my favourite pieces have come from vintage stores or unexpected second-hand finds. Recently, I found a console table in dark solid wood with iron details, and it instantly added a sense of character to the room.

I often find pieces in local vintage shops - this is where I discover some of my most special finds, often at very reasonable prices. When browsing from home, I tend to return to The Oblist, 1stDibs, Pamono and Etsy - places where I can easily spend hours searching.

There is something undeniably chic about having objects in your home that no one else has.

06. Drapery that kisses the floor

Curtains are often treated as a purely practical element, but when done well, they become an essential part of the interior itself.

Long drapery that softly touches the floor adds warmth, softness and a sense of completeness to a room. It frames windows, filters daylight and creates a more layered atmosphere overall.

I particularly love the combination of long curtains with a Roman blind behind them. Lately, I find myself drawn to curtains with a pleated detail, hung on an iron pole and gently held in place with a tassel - paired with a Roman blind with a soft, relaxed wave. It feels incredibly elegant and intentional.

Curtains should never feel like an afterthought. They are closer to furniture than decoration, playing a significant role in the overall atmosphere of a home. And when they gently kiss the floor, they instantly elevate the entire room.

In the end, the interiors I’m most drawn to rarely feel overly styled. They feel considered - layered slowly through materials, fabrics, light and objects that age well and hold meaning over time.

It’s often these quieter details, the ones you almost don’t notice at first, that make a home feel truly beautiful.

The first home we truly shaped together was our second. We didn’t take it down to its core, but we reworked it with care - custom joinery, a reimagined kitchen and bathroom, thoughtful adjustments to the layout. It wasn’t cosmetic, but a restructuring that altered how the apartment functioned and felt.

It was in that process that I, for the first time, truly felt at home - not only in the apartment itself, but in the act of shaping it. Planning the renovation, sourcing the right pieces, revisiting details until they felt fully resolved felt instinctive to me. I could spend hours researching and refining. It didn’t drain me; it steadied me. That was the beginning - the moment I understood that shaping spaces with intention was not simply an interest, but part of who I am.

For almost a year, I lived there mostly alone while my husband was working abroad. The apartment was nearly empty. We had invested everything into the renovation itself, leaving little room for furniture. So I waited. I chose pieces that would anchor the space rather than fill it - a well-made sofa, a vintage console, a dining table with presence, a lamp that could hold the room quietly, and pieces designed to move with us into future homes.

That season taught me what matters. That less can feel stronger. That patience is not a compromise, but often the most enduring choice of all.

By the time we moved into our second home, we carried those lessons with us. What had started as careful optimisation now became a full commitment to building from the ground up.

Everything was new and made with intention. Marble surfaces. Integrated lighting. Custom veneer cabinetry. Chevron parquet floors running throughout the apartment. It was a home shaped deliberately, with timeless as the guiding principle.

The process was intense, but it taught us more than any course could have - not only about materials and construction, but about knowing when to push and when to pause. When you build everything yourself, you begin to understand that what truly carries a home is not what feels current, but what feels considered.

A few years later, our life shifted. We chose to move into something smaller. Partly for practical reasons, and partly because I allowed myself to step into independence. With that came a tighter budget and a very different set of constraints.

This time, there was no full renovation. Many improvements we made ourselves. Every decision had to be weighed carefully. And yet, something unexpected happened. Our standards did not lower. They sharpened.

In this home, texture plays a larger role. Details matter more. Curtain poles are chosen carefully. Pleats are soft rather than strict. Roman blinds are gently shaped instead of perfectly straight. Trim has been added to otherwise plain walls. Wallpaper appears in selected rooms, not everywhere, but where it can create depth. A built-in bookshelf was designed not just for storage, but for styling - layering vintage objects collected over time.

Small decisions, almost invisible on their own, but together they define how a space feels to live in.

Over the past year, I have shared much of this journey on my YouTube channel, Cecilie Kruse, from renovation to transformation and from one home to another. I receive daily questions about wall colours, lighting, rugs, interior, and materials.

Not because I am formally trained as an interior architect, but because I have lived with these decisions in three homes, under different circumstances.

Research is a constant part of how I work. I care deeply about finding pieces and details that balance quality, contemporary design and price. (And yes, I will paint a room twice within the blink of an eye if the first attempt isn’t quite right.) Still, most of that research never makes it online.

That is why this space exists.

Building three homes has taught me that quality is shaped by more than budget alone. Attention matters just as much. Limitations often make decisions clearer, and small, intentional details tend to matter more than big gestures. A home does not need to be perfect to feel right, but it does need to be considered.

Substack allows me to share that part of the process: the research, the comparisons, the material choices, and the adjustments that happen before something finally feels right. The work that happens before a decision settles.
